Hearing on lethal shark drumlines
Our legal challenge to the use of lethal shark drumlines within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park on behalf of Humane Society International (HSI) commenced in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Brisbane on Wednesday.
Friday 1 February 2019: The challenge is to a permit granted by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to install 173 lethal drumlines throughout the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. HSI argues that the grant of the permit is inconsistent with the Authority’s legal responsibilities to protect the World Heritage Site, as the use of lethal drumlines imperils the Reef and its marine life.
HSI’s expert witnesses, Dr William Robbins and Dr Leah Gibbs, gave evidence on Wednesday and Thursday. Dr Robbins is a marine biologist specialising in sharks. Dr Gibbs is a senior lecturer in Geography and Sustainable Communities at the University of Wollongong and has a research focus on community attitudes towards shark control measures.
The hearing closed this afternoon.
